CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 16-year-old girl was raped inside a classroom by an older student at Curie Metropolitan High School on the city's Southwest Side, police said.

Chicago police are investigating, and though it appears the identity of the accused attacker may be known no arrests have been made. The school said they "are communicating with the families of the two students who are affected."

The incident occurred Friday afternoon, according to Chicago Public Schools. In a statement on Monday, the district said: "While we can't comment on an ongoing investigation, there was no immediate threat to this school. The school is continuing to work with CPD and the CPS Office of Safety and Security to ensure a safe environment for all of our students."

Curie officials acknowledged the incident on the school's website, saying, in part: "Due to the privacy of the children involved, we are unable to provide further details at this time, but are communicating with the families of the two students who are affected."

A source close to the victim's family said the girl was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital following the attack. She and her sister were withdrawn from Curie Monday morning.

After school on Monday, parents said the school did not inform them of what happened, although some had found out through social media.

"We didn't have any phone calls, or letters or anything like that," said parent Veronica Robles. "It's a little disturbing having my child here. I don't want my child to be exposed to this kind of behavior. It's not acceptable."
