Overall crime in Chicago down 6 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014, police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- New figures from the Chicago Police Department show the city is holding steady when it comes to murders.

There was one fewer murder and 36 fewer shooting victims in April 2015 compared to the same month last year.

Police said in the first four months of 2015 compared to the same time period in 2014, overall crime is down 6 percent and arrests are down by 5 percent. More than 2,200 illegal guns have been recovered - a 17 percent increase - and arrests for illegal gun possession are up 20 percent.

CPD announced earlier this week that department leaders will go on a "listening tour" with ministers and community leaders to reach out to residents and hear their concerns about crime and safety first-hand. Officials said they hope to create an ongoing dialogue between police and the communities they serve.

Nearly 100 new detectives graduated this week. Police said over the last four years, 1,250 new officers graduated from the academy and about 400 more recruits are in training.
