Skimming devices found on Bank of America ATMs in Wicker Park, Bucktown

CHICAGO (WLS) -- There's a troubling trend at Chicago ATMs: criminals are using high-tech devices called skimmers to steal money from unsuspecting customers.

Bank of America confirms one ATM in Wicker Park and another in Bucktown were targeted by thieves with illegal skimmers, nearly invisible devices placed on bank machines that read account details when the cards of the unsuspecting are slid in.

Just this week, Chicago police tweeted an alert about skimmers showing a typical setup where hidden cameras or keypad overlays read customer PINs and bank data is corralled from the skimmer that fits over the real card reader.

Last week, suburban police found a skimmer on a gas pump at a Shell station in Lombard.

Bank of America is assuring its customers that any losses are reimbursed 100 percent. In a statement, the bank encouraged its customers to notify a financial center employee if there is something unusual about an ATM and use online banking to regularly monitor their accounts.

The FBI says customers should use ATMs within bank buildings and avoid those in tourist areas whenever possible.
