The Fourth of July weekend in Chicago had violent start with six people dead and 46 hurt. Among the injured was the son of a Cook County judge.

Duriel Lyke is recovering at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and is lucky to be alive after the 28-year-old man was shot in the head and the leg Saturday night in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood

"He's alert he's stable. He's talking a little bit," said Lyke's father, Judge John Lyke.

Lyke was in Chatham late Saturday, following a funeral. Police say he was standing outside this 79th Street Lounge when a drive-by shooter took aim at those gathered. According to investigators, he wasn't the target, but that didn't keep him safe. His father, Cook County Judge John Lyke, is no stranger to the city's gun violence.

"I hear cases similar to my son's on a daily basis and it's disconcerting when it hits home," said Judge Lyke.

Lyke's neighbors are also upset. He still lives in the Calumet Park home he grew up in, with his mother, girlfriend and young child.

"He's a young man who's working. He's got a family. He wants better things for himself," said Thomas Keller, Duriel Lyke's neighbor.

For Judge Lyke, who has spent years both prosecuting and defending violent criminal cases in Cook County, he never expected his son become a victim of gun violence, but he does have a message for those who perpetrate these crimes.

"This city is under siege with the violence and what I want these young men, young ladies to know that are out here with the guns is that life isn't a video game. You can't hit reset," said Judge Lyke. "Not only to the victims of violence but to the perpetrators' families as well. They didn't choose to have this perpetrator pull that trigger, but they too will suffer if that perpetrator is caught and sentenced to prison."

There was a second man injured in the shooting, a 27-year-old who was shot in the leg. Police say he may have had gang ties and may have been the intended target.
