CHICAGO (WLS) -- A swastika was found painted on an entrance to an elementary school on Chicago's West Side.

A parent alerted ABC7 Eyewitness News to the vandalism at John Hay Public School in the city's South Austin neighborhood.

He said he saw the swastika spray-painted on a door as he dropped his daughter off at school Monday. He said several students saw it as they walked in.

It is unclear when the vandalism occurred. A police report was filed, which initiated an investigation.

A crew from the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation arrived at the school around 9:25 a.m. and painted over the graffiti.

Chicago Public Schools released a statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the incident:

"Chicago Public Schools has no tolerance for this type of despicable act, as we are committed to promoting school environments that are welcoming and supportive of all cultures and beliefs. We are grateful for the City's effort to remove this hateful message from our school."
