CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police say a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in Chicago's Austin neighborhood Wednesday morning around 8:40 a.m.

Police say the teen, who has been identified as Martel Anderson, was walking along the street near West Ferdinand and North Lawler when two males approached him and shot him in the face. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

Witnesses say they heard two shots.

"I just heard the shots and then I ran outside and I saw the boy gunned down," said a witness who calls himself Dolo Mighty.

There are cameras near the scene, though it's unclear whether they captured the shooting. Witnesses say two men were involved.

Anderson, who was better known to friends by the nickname "Telly Foe," was a student at Orr Academy and was believed to be on his way to school at the time of the shooting.

"He was just a cool kid, he didn't bother no one, walked the halls - practically like a ghost," said Michael Johnson, a friend.

Friends say Anderson was quiet at school. He liked to play basketball and played football on the school's team.

Police say Anderson was not a documented gang member and they are still searching for a motive in the shooting. No one is in custody.

CPS has not responded for comment.
