Woman charged in fatal wrong-way crash that killed officer

A Kendall County woman has been charged in a wrong-way crash on I-294 that killed a suburban Chicago Ridge police officer last month.

Officials said Sara Lopez, 22, of Bristol, Ill., was drunk when she hit two vehicles at 3:45 a.m. Sept. 13 near Oak Brook. Officer Steven Smith, 27, was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Smith, who was off-duty and coming home from a family wedding, died. Another person was injured in the crash.

Lopez faces two felony charges: reckless homicide and aggravated drunken driving involving death.

She is scheduled to appear in bond court on Saturday.
