Woman killed in Avondale crash was headed to church

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A woman was killed and her husband injured early Sunday in a four-vehicle crash in the Avondale neighborhood on the city's Northwest Side, officials said. The couple was headed to church.

On Sunday evening, Chicago police had a person in custody. Cellphone video captured the driver of one of the vehicles leaving the scene in a taxi. It is unclear whether the person in custody is the same person.

The crash occurred at about 7 a.m. near West Belmont and North Kedzie avenues. The woman, identified by family members as Maria del Carmen Venegas Garcia, and her husband were in a black Chevy Cobalt when a white Jaguar ran a red light, hitting the couple's car, police said. The Cobalt spun out of control and hit two other vehicles.

Garcia was on her way to church. Her 64-year-old husband, Andres Garcia, who was driving the Cobalt, was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he is recovering from broken ribs.

"She was wonderful. If you would have met her, she was the world," said Garcia's nephew, Eluisio Venegas said. "l Always smiling, always partying. Never missed a day of church."

Garcia was extricated from the Cobalt and transported to Illinois Masonic where she was later pronounced dead. Three others refused treatment.

The family is asking for anyone with information to come forward.
