Trump wins Indiana, Young wins U.S. Senate seat, Holcomb wins governor's race

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- Republican Donald Trump has won the presidential contest in Indiana, with home-state Gov. Mike Pence on the ticket as his running mate.

Republican Rep. Todd Young is the projected winner of the Indiana U.S. Senate seat, defeating Democrat Evan Bayh.

Trump topped Democrat Hillary Clinton to become the 12th Republican to carry Indiana in the last 13 presidential elections. The victory gives Trump Indiana's 11 electoral votes.

Neither candidate paid much attention to Indiana during the campaign. Trump essentially clinched the Republican nomination with his victory in Indiana's May primary.

Trump was heavily favored to win Indiana even before he picked Pence as his vice presidential candidate just before the GOP convention in July.

Indiana voters turned out in record numbers for the 2016 election.

The Indiana Secretary of State's office says that through Sunday, more than 711,000 people had cast early or absentee ballots. That number tops the record set in 2008.

Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb was put on the Republican ticket after Mike Pence left office to become Donald Trump's running mate.

Holcomb faced Democratic candidate John Gregg and Libertarian party candidate Rex Bell.
