CHICAGO (WLS) -- Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner says he would have vetoed Illinois' medical marijuana law.

He claims there is a "secret process" of awarding licenses to growers and sellers. Rauner says the public needs to know who's applying for the limited number of state permits and whether they're given to those with political clout.

"We could create a process that is open, transparent and we could have an auction process where companies bid for a license for a defined period of time so taxpayers could actually make money from the process," said Rauner.

"The purpose of secrecy now is not to keep the general public from knowing who the applicants are, it's to keep the application process pure," said State Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie.

Rep. Lang, a co-sponsor of the bill, defended Quinn's policy. He says names will be redacted so those making the decisions won't know who the applicants are.
