Take a spring break staycation with the kids

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Spring break is around the corner, which means the kiddos will be out of school with nothing to do.

Need to solve their boredom, but can't go out of town? Donna Bozzo, "The Lady with the Alligator Purse," compiled a list of fun "staycation" ideas to enjoy around town.

See exotic animals

You don't have to travel to a faraway rainforest to see exotic animals. I'm here at Brookfield Zoo, one of my favorite places to go when I was growing up. Here you can travel to Asia and explore the wonders of the fragile rainforest, spot gentle giraffes in the African savannah even track animal prints and come face to face with a lemur at the Hamill Family Play Zoo! All in one day's play!

Check into a luxurious hotel

You don't have to go to Mexico to check into a luxurious resort. The Ritz Carlton is offering Spring Break resort activities to families who check in for the night, like pizza making, indoor basketball, fitness classes, movie nights, even pillow decorating. A great escape for a night or two!

Catch a Broadway show

You don't have to fly to New York to see a play. Blue Man Group is a great see for families at the Briar Street Theatre! They even invite kids to learn about the science of the blue goo on the Blue Man website, a fun activity to try at home after the show!

Go on a cruise

You don't have to go to Florida to go on a cruise. Entertainment Cruises is offering many cruises in these coming weeks, including a 75 minute lake and river architectural tour - an educated, in depth look at Chicago's history and the stories behind our beautiful landmarks and buildings. Hit the water without hitting the road, and learn a little along the way!

Have a service vacation

You don't have to travel to a third world country to lend folks in need a helping hand. Chicago Cares offers many opportunities for kids eight and older alongside their parents. Depending on your area and your area of interest, Chicago Cares offers 250 monthly volunteer projects in every corner of the city. Families can find lots of ways to help out - anything from tutoring a third grader to visiting a lonely senior with your pet! Many ways to help out without having to leave home!
