Barack Obama joins Twitter; follows all Chicago pro teams except Cubs

He has been living outside of Chicago for six years, but President Barack Obama is still loyal to his teams.

The president announced on Monday at 11:41 a.m. ET that he had finally gotten his own personal Twitter account as @POTUS. Of the 65 accounts that he is following, 58 are political, 3 are the colleges he attended (Occidental College, Columbia and Harvard) and four are his favorite sports teams: the Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls and White Sox.

Noticeably absent? The Cubs.

Since Obama is a White Sox fan, he doesn't root for the team on the north side of Chicago. In 2008, before his first presidential term, Obama in an interview with Stuart Scott on SportsCenter said Cubs fans aren't serious fans.

"You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer, beautiful people up there," Obama said. "People aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox, that's baseball. South side."

Obama served as an Illinois state senator and U.S. Senator representing Illinois before being elected president.

His reasons for not backing the Cubs might also be due to political reasons.

The Cubs are owned by the Ricketts family. The patriarch, Joe Ricketts, is a noted Obama critic who is the founder and chairman of Ending Spending. He put in more than $7.3 million of his own money in 2014 to fight the government on what he says is out-of-control spending. Ricketts' son Todd has also contributed to the group. His daughter Laura has fundraised for Obama, while Cubs managing partner Tom has made limited political contributions.

Then again, the First Lady roots for the Cubs. In 2012, Michelle Obama called her baseball rooting interest conflicting with her husband's "a mixed marriage."

The Cubs are hoping the First Lady can sway her husband's baseball affiliation.

The president picked up more than 250,000 followers in his first hour and a half on Twitter. Obama has previously signed tweets that were his on the @barackobama account, which is run by members of his staff. At 59.2 million followers, it is the third-most-followed account on Twitter behind the accounts of pop stars Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.
