Braves top prospect Dansby Swanson to make MLB debut on Wedneday

ATLANTA -- The future is now for Atlanta Bravestop prospect Dansby Swanson.

The No. 1 overall draft pick of 2015 has been called up from Double-A and he will be in the lineup at shortstop on Wednesday against Minnesota, the team announced on Tuesday.

An opening for Swanson at the shortstop position was created when the Braves traded veteran shortstop Erick Aybar to the Detroit Tigers. Atlanta received infielder Mike Aviles and catcher Kade Scivicque in the trade.

"I think that Dansby is going to be able to handle it mentally," Atlanta president of baseball operations John Hart said. "He's not a kid that if he comes in and really struggles right out of the gate that it's going to affect him. This is a kid that finds a lot of ways to help you win games other than maybe what he does with the bat."

Swanson, acquired last December in the deal that sent starting pitcher Shelby Miller to Arizona, has split the season between Class A Carolina and Double-A Mississippi. In 127 games in the minors, Swanson is hitting .277 with 10 homers and 66 RBIs.

Swanson will be the fourth player to make his debut in the majors this season after playing in the College World Series last season.

All four of them were taken in the top eight of last year's draft. Swanson was picked by the Braves in the No. 1 spot, his former Vanderbilt Commodores teammate Carson Fulmer went to the White Sox, and LSU Tigers Alex Bregman and Andrew Benintendi landed in Houston and Boston.
