Brittney Griner among 27 who will attend U.S. training camp in Las Vegas

Brittney Griner is one of 27 players invited to the U.S. women's national team training camp in Las Vegas beginning on Monday.

Griner, who was arrested April 22 on suspicion of assault following a fight with her fiancee fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson, helped the U.S. win a gold medal at the world championship last fall.

"Obviously Brittney's been involved for several years," USA national team director Carol Callan said Thursday. "In this particular camp, the timing is such that it just happened and now we have a camp. We're still in the process of gathering information and Brittney will participate. We just don't have enough information to make a decision to do anything other than that."

Griner entered into a diversion agreement where she will plead guilty to disorderly conduct and attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling. All charges will be dismissed if she completes her counseling.

While Griner will attend, Johnson won't, but it has nothing to do with the court case.

"I began talking to the pool via email after the last event," Callan said. "Multiple times over the course of the year leading up to the camp she hasn't responded."

Joining Griner in camp will be three-time Olympic gold medalists Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, who is recovering from a broken bone in her left hand suffered playing overseas for her Russian club team. She is sitting out the upcoming WNBA season after accepting an offer from her Russian club to rest.

Other returning Olympic medalists include Seimone Augustus, Sylvia Fowles, Candace Parker, Cappie Pondexter, Tina Charles, Angel McCoughtry and Maya Moore.

The roster also includes two college players, with UConn's Breanna Stewart and South Carolina's Tiffany Mitchell.

The U.S. has already qualified for next year's Olympics in Rio, where the Americans will try to win a sixth straight gold medal.
