Chicago Park District attempts swim lesson record
CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago Park District, along with other swimming pools worldwide, is attempting to help set a new Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Swimming Lesson. The event is being held Friday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at Chicago Park District pools and is open to all ages. Registration is available on site beginning at 9 a.m.
This is the fifth year this event has been held. The current record stands at 32,450 participants representing 13 countries.
The Chicago Park District is hoping that whether or not the event sets a new record, it will help raise awareness in the community about the importance of swimming lessons, and that swimming lessons save lives.
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 5, and the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under 14. Research shows that formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent for children between 1 and 4 years old.
