Cubs lose to Mets 4-1 in NLCS game 2

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago Cubs were defeated by the New York Mets 4-1 in game two of the NLCS in New York City Sunday night.

Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson robbed Chris Coghlan of a homer, stole two bases and scored twice. Murphy became the first player since Tampa Bay slugger Evan Longoria in 2008 to homer in four consecutive postseason games.

The best-of-seven series shifts to Wrigley Field on Tuesday night, with New York ace Jacob deGrom scheduled to pitch against Kyle Hendricks. The wild-card Cubs need a comeback to capture their first pennant in 70 years.

Cubs fans watched on pins and needles. It wasn't a good start as the Mets scored three runs in the first inning, but in true Cubs fandom fashion, hope is always the last thing to die.

"I think they're going to go all the way," says fan Donna Bernier. "If not tonight, then going forward."

"I trust in how the team has been doing all year," says Cubs fan Jake Wohlbrandt. "Trust in Theo and Trust in Joe Maddon. They're way past where we thought they were going to be, so who cares, enjoy it!"

At Racine Plumbing in Lincoln Park, cheering for the Mets isn't just welcome but encouraged, though some transplant New Yorkers admitted they kind of like the Cubs too.

"The Cubs have that same vibe the Mets have," says Kevin Mulvey. "The underdog team. If they weren't playing the Mets, I'd probably be rooting for them."

"It's fantastic, it's kind of a win-win situation because I really do like the Cubs too," says Alan Rado. "I can't lose here right now."

Wrigleyville was quieter perhaps than expected because it's a Sunday night, but that wasn't a deterrent for Brian Thompson. He drove six hours from Lexington, Ky., just to watch the game at Murphy's in the shadow of Wrigley Field.

"I have faith," Thompson says. "I've had faith for a long time and hopefully I'll make my way back up here in a couple of weeks. That's where it's at. That's going to happen. I may be broke and homeless, but I'll make it back up here."

The Cubs return home to Wrigley Field for game three of the National League Championship Series on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
