CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib contusion. Reliever Spencer Patton was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to replace Coghlan on the roster before Wednesday night's games against Milwaukee.

Coghlan was injured in a collision with shortstop Addison Russell during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader sweep of the Brewers.

Coghlan remained on the ground in shallow left field for several minutes after making a catch but was able to finish the game.

Coghlan, 31, is hitting .222 in 27 games with the Cubs this season, and is hitting .165 overall including 51 games he played earlier in the year for Oakland. Patton, a 28-year-old righty, has posted a 5.11 ERA over 12 1/3 big-league innings this season.

The move capped a busy day for the Cubs. Infielder Tommy La Stella reported to Double-A Tennessee, ending a standoff with the club that began July 29 when he was optioned to Iowa but refused to report.

Also, veteran reliever Joe Smith was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. That moved cleared a roster spot for righty Trevor Cahill, who has been added to the roster for Tuesday's doubleheader under baseball's "26th Man Rule".

Finally, the club announced that starter John Lackey would have his next start pushed back to Tuesday to give him more time to rest a sore pitching shoulder. Lackey left his start during the seventh inning on Aug. 14 with what was described as shoulder tightness.

Manager Joe Maddon says that lefty Mike Montgomery will make a spot start in Lackey's place on Saturday in Colorado, with Cahill likely to "piggyback" him to fill innings.
