CHICAGO -- Following extra innings on Friday and a rain delay on Saturday that limited starter Kyle Hendricks to just five innings, theChicago Cubsmade a roster move Sunday before the finale of their four-game series with the Cincinnati Redsto provide some bullpen insurance.
Right-hander Brian Schlitter was promoted from Triple-A Iowa for his third stint with the team this season, and outfielder Junior Lake was optioned to the minors.
"I haven't spoken with everybody yet, but I don't think we're awful because a lot of the guys that have been pitching often are not throwing a lot of pitches," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of the bullpen. "When you're pitch efficient out of the bullpen, you can be used more consecutively, and a lot of the guys have been pitching efficiently."
Schlitter, 29, went 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in nine appearances during his first two stints with the team. On Sunday night, he got two outs in the 11th in the Cubs' 2-1 victory.
