CHICAGO -- The Cubs are well represented in the first release of National League All-Star fan balloting, boasting vote leaders at all four infield positions including first base, where Anthony Rizzo leads all players in total votes.
Rizzo, second basemanBen Zobrist, shortstopAddison Russelland third basemanKris Bryantlead at their positions, while center fielder Dexter Fowler is second among outfielders behind Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. The top three vote-getters among outfielders start the game. Additionally, right fielder Jason Heyward and left fielder Jorge Soler rank fourth and sixth, respectively, while catcher Miguel Montero is third in voting at his position.
Rizzo is a two-time All-Star but has never been elected to start by the fans. He would become just the second Cubs first baseman (Derrek Lee) to win the fan-elected vote if his 600,000-vote lead on Brandon Belt of the San Francisco Giants holds up. Bryant made the All-Star team as a rookie last season; this would be Russell's first appearance. Zobrist is a two-time All-Star as well but also has never been named a starter. Going into Wednesday's games, he ranks fourth in hitting in the NL with a .345 average.
The only team to have all four starting infielders in the All-Star Game was the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals. The NL starting infield consisted of first baseman Bill White, second baseman Julian Javier, third baseman Ken Boyer and shortstop Dick Groat.
The All-Star Game will be held on July 12 in San Diego. Voting continues at mlb.com until early July. The league will release weekly updates on vote totals until starters are announced.
