NEW YORK -- The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Chris Coghlan on the disabled list with a rib cage injury Sunday and called up Jeimer Candelario from Triple-A Iowa to replace him on the 25-man roster.
Coghlan, who has been dealing with discomfort in his rib cage for several days, started for the Cubs in right field Saturday night. He flied out in his only at-bat before being replaced by Ben Zobrist. Coghlan expects to undergo tests Tuesday in Chicago to determine the extent of his injury.
"It's tough to gauge when you don't know how much to push or how much to back off," Coghlan said. "It's hard to say you can't go anymore. But I knew I was probably going to have to go on the DL. We've got a short bench, and you don't want to hurt the team."
Candelario, 22, was hitting .333 with a 1.052 OPS at Iowa after receiving a promotion from Double-A Tennessee. He was rated as the Cubs' No. 10 prospect before the season by ESPN's Keith Law.
Candelario took an early flight out of Austin, Texas, on Sunday morning and was in Chicago's starting lineup against Noah Syndergaard in the series finale against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Manager Joe Maddon used Candelario at third base and batted him sixth.
"He's a young kid with a great body and a big upside," Maddon said before the game. "He's a switch-hitter with pop. All that stuff is very exciting."
Coghlan joins Dexter Fowler and Tommy La Stella among the veteran position players on the disabled list for the Cubs.
