Dolphins fire offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, promote Zac Taylor

The Miami Dolphins fired offensive coordinator Bill Lazor on Monday after yet another "anemic" performance in Sunday's loss to the New York Jets, interim coach Dan Campbell announced.

Quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor will take over play-calling duties for the final five games of the season, and Phil McGeoghan has been elevated to wide receivers coach.

"We relieved Bill Lazor of his duties, and I appreciate everything that Bill has put into this and all the hard work and dedication that he gave to this organization and this offense," Campbell said Monday. "We just felt like it was time to move in another direction."

Lazor's departure isn't a surprise, as Miami's offense failed to produce enough points or balance to be successful. The Dolphins were held scoreless Sunday until the 2:30 mark of the third quarter and had just 12 total rushing yards in the 38-20 loss.

Miami's pass-to-run ratio was an astounding 58-to-9 against the Jets, and the Dolphins went 4-of-15 on third-down attempts after entering Sunday's game ranked 31st in the league in that category.

"I made this decision," Campbell said. "I looked at it last night on the plane ride home. ... I wanted to make sure I was making the best decision that I could. I looked at everything, and I feel like offensively we've been anemic for five weeks now. I feel like we've tried to do a number of things. It didn't work out."

The Dolphins (4-7) have lost four of their past five games and averaged just 15.6 points during that span with Lazor calling the plays.

"Moving forward we're looking at every opportunity to get better, to get production out of the offense and to put playmakers in position to make plays," Campbell said.

Miami is 0-5 against AFC East opponents and hasn't won a division game since Dec. 1, 2014.

The team also fired former head coach Joe Philbin and former defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle after Week 4 of the season.

The Dolphins are expected to clean house in the offseason and search for new leadership with the coaching staff and front office.
