Dowell Loggains replaces Adam Gase as Bears' OC

CHICAGO -- The Bears have named Dowell Loggains offensive coordinator, the team announced Monday.

Loggains, the Bears' quarterbacks coach in 2015, replaces Adam Gase, whom the Miami Dolphins hired as head coach over the weekend.

Loggains has eight years of NFL experience, including two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans (2012-13).

"Dowell played a critical role on our offense last year," Bears head coach John Fox said. "He's an excellent coach with experience as a playcaller and a broad knowledge of offensive football. He has earned the respect of our players because they know he can help them get better.

"As I mentioned at the end of the season, our systems are in place. We will always look to evolve because the NFL is fluid and adapting is key to good coaching. Dowell will help us build on what we started as we head into the 2016 season."

Under Gase and Loggains' tutelage, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had a career-high 92.3 passer rating in 2015. Cutler's 11 interceptions were his fewest in a season in which he appeared in at least 15 games. The 32-year-old quarterback finished with a 64.4 completion percentage (311-of-483) and 7.58 passing yards per attempt, the second-highest totals of his 10-year NFL career.

"[Loggains] has done a really good job of managing our room, from the third-stringer to me, and he works well with the rest of the coaches developing the plan," Cutler said in December. "I think Adam would testify to it that Dowell has been a large help to me and him both."

Loggains is expected to run an offensive system similar to what Gase used last year.

"Let me make this clear: Our systems are our systems," Fox said. "They're not any individual's systems; they are our systems. Our systems aren't changing -- offense, defense or special teams. You tweak, and you grow, and you adjust. You have to do that in this league because it's a fluid league. There are trends and things that happen and things that you have to react to, regardless of what they are. That's all part of coaching. One of the hard things about being a new staff is introducing those systems, and they won't change."

In addition to his time in Chicago (2015) and Tennessee (2006-13), Loggains worked as the Cleveland Browns' quarterbacks coach in 2014. He spent one season (2005) as a scouting assistant with the Dallas Cowboys.

Loggians is a former backup quarterback and holder at the University of Arkansas.
