Ed Belfour raises $215K after selling collection, including gold medal

Ed Belfour's decision to trade his Olympic gold medal to go into the distilling business with his son has paid off.

The medal that the Hockey Hall of Fame goalie won at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games while representing Canada was auctioned off for $41,200, according to Classic Auctions, which handled the sale.Overall, the 66 items of hockey memorabilia Belfour put up for sale sold for just over $215,000.

The sale prices were updated by Classic Auctions in a release issued Wednesday, a day after bidding closed.

Last week, Belfour said he was selling part of his collection to join son, Dayn, and establish Belfour Distilleries. The business is to be based in Texas and focus on distilling bourbons and whiskeys.

A mask Belfour wore from 1992 to '94 with the Chicago Blackhawks sold for $18,292.

The collection also included game-worn masks, autographed jerseys and sticks, and the 13-inch replica of the Vezina Trophy Belfour won in 1993.

Belfour was a two-time Vezina winner and the NHL's 1991 rookie of the year during a 16-plus season NHL career that ended with the Florida Panthers in 2006-07. His 484 career wins rank third on the NHL list, and he led the NHL in fewest goals allowed four times.

The medal, which he received for being the third-string goalie behind Martin Brodeur and Curtis Joseph as Canada won its first gold in men's hockey in 50 years, came in a box that includes the signatures of IOC then-president Jacques Rogge and former U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who was president of the Salt Lake City Olympic committee.
