A fan who was struck in the head by a foul ball at PNC Park during Monday's game between the Pirates and Cubs has been released from the hospital.

The Pirates provided the update on the female fan Tuesday, saying they "are extremely grateful for this positive outcome."

The incident caused a 23-minute delay in the second inning as the woman was taken off on a stretcher from the seats behind home plate.

The fan, said by the Pirates to be alert when she was wheeled out, was finding her seat with her back to the field of play as Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro fouled a ball straight back. The ball hit the netting as well as the side of the woman's head, which was close enough for contact.

She immediately put her hand to her head and collapsed to the ground. After initially receiving treatment at the park, the woman was taken to the hospital for additional treatment.

"We are extremely grateful for this positive outcome," the Pirates said in a statement Tuesday. "The organization is in the process of reaching out to her to show our support. Due to privacy laws, we will not reveal the name of the fan, nor additional details at this time.

"We wish to thank the PNC Park personnel and fellow fans who were on the scene at the time, as well as the Pittsburgh EMS for their quick response."

After the game, Cubs manager Joe Maddon reacted with dismay to the incident.

"[Outfielder]Chris Coghlan thought the ball hit the wall," Maddon said. "That's how loud it was. The umpire said the same thing. It was that really hard, cracking sound.

"The fact nobody is getting up, and there are ice bags, we had no idea what was going on. Couple guys saw it and thought it was horrid."
