Jackie Robinson West tour Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON D.C. (WLS) -- The Jackie Robinson West All-Stars wrapped up their tour of the nation's capital Friday, following a trip to the White House on Thursday.

The White House requested a special tour for Jackie Robinson West. A park ranger showed the team the National Mall and Memorial Park. They walked at the feet of Abraham Lincoln while learning about the civil war and the abolition of slavery.

"It's cool to see it in person," said Pierce Jones. "It's not the same as seeing it on TV and having a tour guide tell you all the famous stuff that happened and occurred. So we really got to learn a lot more history than we did in the classroom, or seen in pictures or TV."

Before walking through the Vietnam and Korean memorials, their guide shared the significance of the names and sculptures honoring the fallen. And at the Martin Luther King memorial, they walked along side Dr. King to hear more about the struggles and dreams of a generation.

"He's talking about the stuff about Martin Luther King and African Americans a lot of people helped us be who we are, let us play baseball," says Trey Hondras.

Along the tour, they were reminded of their accomplishments. Fellow tourists wanted to take pictures and congratulate the team for winning the Little League National Championship.

Thursday, they were greeted at the White House by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. They even got to meet the first family's dogs. The team was also joined on the trip by the widow and son of JRW's founder Joseph Haley.

"All this is very personal for me and my mom and my family," says Bill Haley, director of the Jackie Robinson West baseball program. "To have young people that we worked with for so long to reach this level of success and acclaim is really rewarding."

"This is an opportunity that most other kids will never experience," says Jackie Robinson West coach Jason Little. "So I'm thankful and grateful for all that. I'm really excited to see what happens in the future."

It was a fitting to end this historic visit as these young men find their way and make their marks on history.
