One day after Fighting Irishcoach Brian Kelly voiced support for resurrecting the Notre Dame-Michigan football rivalry, Wolverines counterpart Jim Harbaugh said he's "on board fully" with an idea that has been worked on for months.
"I've been on board since the inception," Harbaugh told reporters Friday while at Detroit's Sound Mind Sound Body, an academy-like setting that is not considered a satellite camp."[It's] something that's been worked on for many months -- going on seven, eight, nine months now -- and still some T's to cross and I's to dot. But I've been onboard fully since the inception."
Kelly told the South Bend Tribune on Thursday that renewing the rivalry was a priority. He intimated the game could take place soon after 2017, upon the conclusion of the Notre Dame-Michigan State series.
Michigan currently has just two nonconference opponents scheduled in 2018 and an open date on Sept. 8, 2018.
"We want to do it as soon as we can," Kelly told the Tribune.
The series dates back to 1887, and the teams met every year from 2002 to '14. Notre Dame notified Michigan in 2012 that it wanted to end the series -- which was slated to continue until 2031 -- shortly after agreeing to play five games per year against ACC schools.
Notre Dame won the last meeting, 31-0, in 2014. Michigan leads the series 24-17-1.
