Legendary track coach Newton remembered at memorial service

ELMHURST, Ill. (WLS) -- Hundreds gathered at York Community High School in Elmhurst Saturday to honor Hall of Fame track coach and Korean War veteran Joe Newton.

Newton passed away in December after retiring from York in 2016. The teams he coached won more than 300 conference championships in track and cross country.

Those wins included 23 consecutive titles between 1978 and 2000. Newton himself was named Coach of the Year 20 times by the Illinois Coaches Association.
