Former Notre Dame safety Max Redfield was formally charged Monday with carrying a handgun without a license, 10 days after the senior and four other Fighting Irish football players were arrested after police stopped them for speeding, the Fulton County Jail confirmed.

Redfield, sophomore linebacker Te'von Coney, freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson, redshirt freshman cornerback Ashton White and sophomore running back Dexter Williams were all formally charged Monday with possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.

The handgun charge against Redfield is a Class A misdemeanor. Stepherson and Williams were initially accused of possession of a handgun without a license as well upon their Aug. 19 arrests, but Redfield was the only one of the players hit with that charge Monday.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly dismissed Redfield, a senior starter, from the team two days after the arrests, and he said the other four players would be subject to internal team discipline.

Kelly said Wednesday that the other four players are currently practicing with the team but that the playing status of the four is in the hands of the university.

All five players are scheduled to appear in Fulton County (Indiana) Court on Tuesday.
