Northwesterndefensive tackle Sean McEvilly, a sixth-year senior, has retired from football due to "chronic orthopedic issues," according to the university.

McEvilly missed most of the 2013 season with a foot injury, missed the entire 2014 season with a foot injury and then missed time this past spring with a foot injury. Still, he was expected to play a significant role this season.

"It's disappointing to not be on the field opening camp this week, but this is the right decision not just for my health and future, but for the team," McEvilly said in a release. "I'm so thankful for the teammates and coaches I've competed alongside, and the opportunity I've had at Northwestern over the last five years."

McEvilly played in 19 career games and started in 13. He finishes his career with 29 career tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.

He already completed an undergraduate degree in economics and currently is pursuing a master's degree in management studies.

"This has been an extremely difficult conclusion for Sean to reach, and it is the best one for him right now and for the long term," coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "He's been an outstanding leader and mentor for his teammates whether on or off the field the last several years, and will continue to be a big part of this team. It's been a privilege watching him develop as a young man. He has a tremendously bright future ahead of him."
