Rays' protest denied by MLB

Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that it has denied the Tampa Bay Rays' protest of Saturday's 5-4, 10-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rays manager Joe Maddon played the game under protest after an incident in the fourth inning when he felt a replay challenge had been granted to Blue Jays manager John Gibbons after the next play had already begun.

"It was inappropriate for [crew chief and third base umpire] Bob [Davidson] to do what he did and permit that to happen," Maddon said Saturday. "I'm trusting that they're going to interpret the rule properly and get us back to that point in the game."

While Maddon had hoped his protest would be upheld, history was not on his side. Last Wednesday the San Francisco Giants became the first team since 1986 to successfully win a protest.
