BOSTON -- Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan said he has not waived his no-trade clause.
His status has remained the same the past few seasons around the trade deadline. He explained he would only waive his no-trade clause if the deal was a perfect fit for both sides. He said he doesn't expect that to change because there aren't many teams in the market for a 40-year-old, fourth-line winger.
Doan admitted he's had conversations with Coyotes general manager John Chayka about such a scenario.
"We've talked off and on about different things and they've been so respectful to me with whatever happens, and it's been good," Doan said Tuesday.
Doan has been with the same organization for 22 seasons, and it has become difficult for him to watch the Coyotes become sellers and not buyers at the deadline. On Sunday, the team dealt center Martin Hanzal and forward Ryan White to the Minnesota Wild. Afterward, Doan became emotional when asked about the trade.
"Whenever you're a seller it makes it way more difficult," he said Tuesday, as the Coyotes prepared to play the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. "Over the years, losing guys that you're close with always makes it tough."
Added Doan: "Yeah, there's frustration. I'm a pretty big fan of Martin Hanzal, and Ryan White came in and was a great guy in our room, and as one of the veteran guys it's always fun to have those people in the room. Sometimes, as a player, you appreciate things so much that when you lose them it makes it tough."
In 2015, the Coyotes traded veteran defenseman Keith Yandle to the New York Rangers and forward Antoine Vermette to the Chicago Blackhawks at the deadline. Doan was in tears when Yandle, a close friend and longtime teammate, was dealt.
"As a player, it's impossible at times not to have your opinions," Doan said. "At the same time, you have to respect authority that's above you and that's what our jobs are and that's how hockey works, to understand people are above you and your job is to play the game."
The Coyotes are on the verge of missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for a fifth consecutive season. Without Hanzal in the mix, Doan feels for Arizona fans.
"As a fan of the Coyotes, I really, really wish Marty was around for a long time," Doan said. "He's a good player and 6-foot-6 centermen are hard to find that play both ends of the ice. And [he] really wants to be here, and really wanted to be part of this and was disappointed and upset when he had to leave.
"But talking to him now he's real excited. He's raving about how great their team is and how wonderful it is there and how talented everybody is."
Hanzal is wearing No. 19 for the Wild, which has been Doan's number with the Coyotes. In fact, Doan asked Hanzal if that's why he picked the jersey number.
"He said it was the only [number] available," Doan said with a laugh.
