AUSTIN, Texas -- True freshman quarterback Shane Buechele won the Texas Longhorns' quarterback battle, and he will make his first start Sunday night against No. 10 Notre Dame.

Buechelethrew a touchdown pass on Texas' first drive of the game.

The ESPN 300 recruit from Arlington, Texas, competed with senior QB Tyrone Swoopes throughout the offseason. Coach CharlieStrong has said that both Buechele and Swoopes will play against the Fighting Irish.

Buechele enrolled early at Texas, in January, and was impressive from the start, throwing for 299 yards and two touchdowns in one half in the team's spring game in April. He and Swoopes split reps in practice throughout preseason camp.

Strong did not name his starting quarterback during the week and waited until kickoff in the hopes of gaining a strategic advantage over Notre Dame, which defeated Texas 38-3 in South Bend last year.

Texas had a three-man battle in the spring between Buechele, Swoopes and Jerrod Heard, but Heard -- the 10-game starter in 2015 -- decided to move to wide receiver during fall camp. He was listed as a No. 2 inside receiver on the team's pregame depth chart.

How will Buechele and Swoopes share the snaps? Strong said Monday that whoever starts will get "most of the work," and first-year offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert has said this will not be a two-quarterback system.

"When we name the quarterback, he is our starter and he will be the starter," Strong said Monday, "unless he gets beat out or something happens to him."
