Tiger Woods is helping the University of Maryland Eastern Shore create a scholarship in the name of Charlie Sifford, the African-American golfer who broke golf's color barrier. Sifford died in February.
Woods made a $10,000 donation that will launch the Sifford Fund, which the school is creating to "provide need-based scholarships to highly talented students who demonstrate a passion for the game of golf ... and who are from populations underrepresented in the golf industry."
The school said is it among 19 universities with a PGA-accredited professional golf management program in which students can earn a bachelor's degree in a specialized field relating to the golf industry.
Sifford won twice on the PGA Tour but got a late start due to the organization's "Caucasian Only" clause, which was rescinded in 1961.
Upon Sifford's death at age 93 on Feb. 3, Woods said: "He fought, and what he did, the courage it took for him to stick with it and be out here to play, I probably wouldn't be here, my dad wouldn't have picked up the game, who knows if the clause would still exist or not. But he broke it down.''
