CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have recalled right-handed reliever Scott Carroll from Triple-A Charlotte.

Carroll on Friday replaced right-hander Erik Johnson, who was optioned to Charlotte immediately after taking the loss Thursday night against Boston.

The White Sox also announced catcher Alex Avila will begin a rehab assignment with Charlotte as he recovers from a strained right hamstring.

The 31-year-old Carroll has a 12.27 ERA in three minor league appearances this season. He had a 3.44 ERA in 18 relief efforts with the White Sox in 2015.

Johnson allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings against the Red Sox in an audition for the vacant rotation spot after John Danks was designated for assignment.
