CTA Brown Line service resumes with minor delays after derailment near Kimball

CHICAGO (WLS) -- CTA Brown Line service returned to normal Thursday morning after a train derailed in the Kimball rail yard.

Emergency crews responded to the 4700-block of North Kimball Avenue around 7:30 a.m. There were no passengers on the train that went off the tracks, but the engineer had minor injuries.

The derailment disrupted Brown Line train service from Kimball to Irving Park at first, but then the CTA cleared the way for trains to run further along the route from Kimball to Western.

The entire Brown Line route reopened with delays around 10 a.m. Thursday.

"Now I'm not on time because of this problem. Why are they not ready for the problem? That's not right," Juanita Salicido said.

A commuter at the Western station said the CTA had dozens of workers explaining the situation and directing people to alternative routes. There crowds waited for one train to load and then the next to head into the Loop.

Free shuttle buses ran between the Kimball and Irving Park stops during the shutdown.

"It usually takes me 45 minutes to get to Harold Washington College. I think it's going to take a lot longer and I'm definitely going to be late to class," Trena Manning said. "I've never had an inconvenience like this before. I always had a backup plan, but not today."
