Woman charged with putting nail polish remover in stepdaughter's bottle sentenced

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (WLS) -- A Carol Stream woman charged with putting nail polish remover in her 17-month-old stepdaughter's baby bottle was sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney.

Andrea Vazquez-Hernandez, 37, was found guilty Friday of two counts of aggravated battery and one count of attempted aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a child under 13. She had been held on a $250,000 bond since May 31, 2016.

Police say they responded to a call at Vazquez-Hernandez's home on May 29th about a child who may have ingested nail polish remover.

Investigators spoke with the victim's father, who reportedly said that he had attempted to give his daughter milk in a bottle and that she immediately spit it out. The child's father told police that he immediately brought his daughter to the hospital and all tests performed there came back normal.

Investigators say that at some point earlier in the day the Vazquez-Hernandez allegedly added approximately one-inch of nail polish remover to her stepdaughter's baby bottle. The infant was not seriously harmed by the incident, investigators said.

Vazquez-Hernandez must serve half of her sentence before she is eligible for parole, authorities said.
