The boy was walking with another child about 7:15 p.m. in the Blackhawk Estates modular home community in the 400-block of West Touhy Avenue when a dark-colored SUV pulled up, police said. Multiple shots were fired from the vehicle, hitting the boy, who later died from his injuries.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Erick Alfaro. He lived in the same block of unincorporated Elk Grove Township, where the shooting took place.
Alfaro attended Grove Junior High School in Elk Grove Village. He was graduating from the 8th grade and was getting ready to start his freshman year of high school this fall, according to a GoFundMe page.
"He was a sweet, funny and smart kid who had his whole life ahead of him," the page said.
Grove Junior High School said it will have grief counselors and supports available for students throughout the next two weeks.
