Burst pipes flood Bridgeview restaurant | How to avoid issues as Chicago weather fluctuates

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (WLS) -- Burst pipes in a Bridgeview restaurant left nearly a foot of water in the dining room.

It started before 2 a.m. at The View family restaurant in the southwest suburbs.

Signs of a messy situation can be seen posted inside The View Family Restaurant on South Harlem in Bridgeview.

"Once it warmed up, they blew up and created a full flood of water," property owner Naseim Baste said.

Now, Baste is left having to clean up after the restaurant's pipes burst during the deep freeze.

There is extensive damage to the restaurant's ceiling and soaked debris and furniture.

Baste said it's going to take at least a couple of months to clean up.

"We opened up all the doors in the restaurant to get everything out, and we can only hope for the best," Baste said.

"We've probably already had 75 calls," said David Denison, owner of Bridgeview's Do Right Rooter.

After dealing with plenty of calls over frozen pipes the past few days, he has advice, as Chicago's cold weather temperatures fluctuate.

"I recommend to keep the faucets running at all times, so the faucets don't get a chance to freeze," Denison said. "Another thing we can do as well is a heat wrap. A heat wrap will have a thermostat on it. So, when the temperature gets too low, the thermostat will kick on and put heat on the pipe so it won't freeze."

Experts also said to make sure exposed pipes are insulated to prevent them from bursting.

Jordan Blanton, the service manager at Goode Plumbing, says the deep freeze a few days ago meant the week would get off to a busy start.

"It was a Sunday afternoon, and the phones starts opening up," Blanton said.

Blanton says it was all-hands-on-deck, and he expects to stay busy with the rollercoaster of weather this week.

After hitting subzero over the weekend, temperatures are climbing into the 40s, only to dive back into the teens later this week.

The freeze and thaw pattern is hard for pipes to handle.

"We get calls when things like this happen, hundreds of calls a day with customers that are dealing with this," Blanton said. "What we recommend is a lot of times, these are on an exterior wall that can be drafty. Just open them up. Allow the heat from the room to get inside the cabinet cavity."
