Northwest Indiana under air quality alert Tuesday due to Canada wildfire smoke

Air quality improving for most part Monday

CHICAGO (WLS) -- For the most part, air quality has been improving throughout the Chicago area Monday.

However, Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana will be under another air quality alert all day Tuesday.

The Chicago area had been under air quality alerts for much of the last week, due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.

At one point last week, Chicago had the worst air quality in the world.

At least 738 wildfires are currently burning in Canada, with at least 201 out of control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.

Medical experts said the unhealthy air conditions are of most concern for active children and adults who have a respiratory condition. Those who experience a respiratory issue should go inside and seek medical attention if necessary.

Doctors said an N95 mask can help people outside, and people at home should make sure filters are fresh so that air conditioning is working at its best.
