Chicago weather: Flood Watch for parts of area through Saturday night, rounds of rain cause flooding

Chicago man dies of possible heat exhaustion in Peoria; funnel clouds reported near Ottawa

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Our coverage of this storyhas moved here.

Funnel clouds were reported in Illinois and there was a Flash Flood Warning for parts of the Chicago area Friday. More flooding is now possible going into the weekend.

A Flood Watch was issued for Kane, DuPage, Kendall; Grundy, Cook, Will, Lake, McHenry, Lake, De Kalb, LaSalle counties until 7 p.m. Saturday.

Some areas have already seen between 3 and 5 inches of rain.

Another round of rain is expected between 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, followed by an addition round between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, ABC7 Chicago meteorologist Jaisol Martinez said.

Flash flooding with over 2 inches of rain an hour is the main concern, but isolated tornadoes can't be ruled out.

The next rounds come after very heavy rain in narrow lines in the area Friday morning and afternoon, especially on the city's Southwest Side and in the suburbs.

The weather continued to be humid Friday, but temperatures have dropped, ABC7 Chicago meteorologist Tracy Butler said. That means showers and heavy downpours and storms are possible anywhere at any time.

There were ground stops at both Midway and O'Hare airports Friday afternoon due to thunderstorms. Midway had delays of about 45 minutes and O'Hare had delays of about 25 minutes.

Once it stopped raining, the floodwater quickly receded from the Guerrero family's basement in West Lawn, but it left a lot of damage behind. The walls, the floors and clothes, were soaked with sewage backup. Now, they are left to clean up like many across the area.

In mere moments, the basement was left drenched.

"I said, 'Well, we've got water. And, not only do we have water, we have sewerage backup and it's nasty down there," homeowner Lynne Guerrero said.

The Department of Water Management planned to work through the overnight hours into Saturday morning to ensure sewers were flowing and moving the excessive storm water out.

Video from 58th Street and Harlem Avenue nearby showed a man trying to walk in deep water.

Parts of Mount Greenwood have low water pressure due to an electrical issue at the Southwest Pumping Station, 19th Ward Alderman Matt O'Shea said.

On inbound Interstate 55 near First Avenue, there was also high water.

Some viaducts in the city were flooding. One appeared flooded at Drake Avenue, off of 47th Street and Archer Avenue.

There were also reports of flooding in south Naperville. City officials said all streets were passable.

Flash flooding hits Southwest Side, suburbs

In Darien, the police department was flooded, officials said. They are located 1710 Plainfield Road.

The machines were humming Friday afternoon as crews were actively pumping the water both out of the parking lot and the police department.

Deputy Police Chief Jason Norton told ABC7 multiple rooms were flooded. The power at the police department even went out.

"So, inside we've had our booking facility take on water. Some of our evidence area - not too much, thankfully - down there. Some of our office area took on some water, as well," Norton said.

Norton said this wasn't the first time the building was flooded, but was one of the most severely impactful. He said rooms with important evidence were hit.

"And, it was awhile ago that that happened. We took some measures to take sure that wouldn't happen again, but on a rainfall, like today, was unusual," Darien Mayor Joseph Marchese said.

In fact, while tending to their own building, the calls to police didn't stop coming in from around town where cars were left stranded in flooding. People were seen pushing their own vehicles as the water receded.

"We're going to have to assess, come Monday morning, what the damages [are], plus we're going to, probably, hear from residents in terms of their concerns and any damage that they had to deal with," Marchese said.

While there was a lot to clean up, thankfully no one was hurt, police said.

More downpours are expected around midnight into Saturday, and continuing throughout the day.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for funnel clouds Friday morning from LaSalle County through southern Cook County and south of that line.

Funnel clouds rarely touch the ground and typically do not pose a hazard, Butler said. Some were spotted earlier Friday near Ottawa.

There has been severe weather throughout the week.

Trees and power lines were knocked down Thursday by strong winds.

There were also multiple days of dangerous heat this week.

In Peoria, a Chicago man died of possible heat exhaustion on Wednesday, officials said. He was identified as Tyrone Smith, 61.
