CHICAGO (WLS) -- Our coverage of this story has moved here.

After enjoying a hearty Thanksgiving meal, Chicagoans might want to start looking for their snow gear.

A winter storm is forecast to drop several inches of snow across the Chicago area starting Saturday morning.

Black Friday started off with single-digit wind chills, but was overall dry.

The National Weather Service upgraded the previous Winter Storm Watch into a Winter Storm Warning, which is set to go into effect for the Chicago area at 3 a.m. Saturday and remain in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday.

The warning expires Sunday at midnight for Ford, Iroquois, Illinois and Benton, Jasper and Newton, Indiana.

ABC7 AccuWeather meteorologists say the first snow is expected to move into the area around 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. Saturday. The heaviest snow forecast to fall during the afternoon and early evening.

There is potential for parts of the area to see a switch over from snow to rain Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Areas in and around Chicago and Northwest Indiana could see five to eight inches of snow while areas to north and west of the city could see more than eight inches of snow.

The IHSA Class 5A-8A Football State Championship games that were supposed to be held Saturday at Illinois State University in Bloomington have been postponed due to plans for the campus to be closed for the expected snow storm, the university announced Friday. The Class 1A-4A football games were still played as normal on Friday.

The impacted games are 5A St. Francis vs. Providence Catholic, 6A Fenwick vs. East St. Louis, 7A St. Rita vs. Brother Rice, and 8A Mount Carmel vs. Oswego. The 5A and 6A games will now be played on Tuesday, and officials will announce a new date for the 7A and 8A games by Saturday evening.

The Illinois Tollway has reminded holiday travelers to use caution while driving this weekend as the snow moves through and sticks around as people return to and leave the Chicago area after Thanksgiving celebrations.

After the snow moves out, cold will remain Sunday, with overnight lows in single digits.

For the Midwest and East Coast, the storm could create dangerous conditions for the thousands of people heading back home after Thanksgiving.
