Painstaking wait for power continues in NW Indiana with transmission line setback in Schererville

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (WLS) -- An excruciating wait for power continues Friday for thousands of people across Northwest Indiana.

After more than a week, thousands of customers are still in the dark.

There's been a setback that could affect restoration efforts.

A transmission line came down in the Schereville area as NIPSCO crews continued restoration work.

"The lights started flickering in the store," NIPSCO customer Wendy Komascar said. "Yeah, it was scary. It's like everybody in the store is going, 'Oh no, not again.'"

Nine thousand customers lost power in Schererville again Thursday.

Everyone there is expected to be back online by Saturday night or early Sunday. That's also the case for people in Hammond.

But after two weeks, nearly 23,000 in Gary and another 6,000 in Portage won't get service back until Tuesday.

Communities are doing what they can to help one another by providing food and other resources to those in need.

"Because you can't cook, you don't have anything," Lottie Boss, event organizer said. "You don't have gas. You don't have stoves. There's electricity. You're running out of money because you got a nickel and dime to go buy this to make sure it doesn't spoil. So everything's not hot...But tonight everything is hot here. Chicken, spaghetti, string beans, cake, general rolls. Everything is made with love tonight."

More food and resource giveaways are planned for today in communities across Northwest Indiana.

There are food giveaways throughout Northwest Indiana Friday to help those without power. In Gary, you can pick up food at Temple of Deliverance on 15th Street, starting at 10 a.m.
