Chicago Piping Plovers said a piping plover named "Ferris" died just six weeks after hatching at Montrose Beach on the city's North Side.
Ferris was killed by a red-trail hawk Saturday.
Two other chicks were not hurt. The chicks are about six weeks old and able to fly.
Ferris was the offspring of a plover named Imani, and he is the offspring of the famous Monty and Rose, who lived at Montrose Beach for many summers.
Imani and Sea Rocket laid eggs earlier this year at the beach.
