The 42-year-old was driving home from work near South Loomis Street and West Flournoy Street on Oct. 15 when, police say, he tried to stop people breaking into a car.
He was shot in the back and left in the street. His loved ones are calling for his killers to be arrested.
Marcelina Herrera urged the crowd of people to walk in honor of her brother on Sunday.
"We are determined to not make my brother one more statistic, because my brother mattered, and he is not an unknown name," Marcelina said.
Marcelina and her sister started the campaign Justice for Sal to continue to raise awareness for the case, which remains unsolved.

"We were just two years apart, and he became my father at the age of 14, when I lost my dad," Remedios said.
The sisters organized the walk to start at the scene of the crime. It proceeded 20 minutes to Herrera's Pilsen home.
About 50 people took to the street in his honor, remembering Salvador's dedication to his family.
"He paid for his mother to go to Spain, where his sister was an exchange student, because that's who Sal was," said Father Brendan Curran with the Resurrection Project.
Salvador's loved ones are urging anyone with information or video footage to come forward.
Police asked anyone with information to call 312-744-8261 and ask for Detective Perricone.
