1 dead after vehicles goes into retention pond in Rolling Meadows, police say

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (WLS) -- A driver died after going into a retention pond in Rolling Meadows Thursday night, police said.

Police said an officer in a marked squad car was on Rohlwing Road at Euclid Avenue at about 9:48 p.m. observed a vehicle with its headlights off going westbound on Euclid Avenue.

The officer performed a U-turn and attempted to stop the vehicle, which went north on Rohlwing Road and then eastbound on Industrial Avenue when the officer lost sight of the vehicle, police said.

The officer then heard a loud noise and located the vehicle partially submerged in a retention pond near 3650 Industrial Avenue, police said.

The driver was removed from the vehicle but lifesaving efforts were not successful and the driver was pronounced dead a the scene, police said.

The crash is under investigation.
