Mayor Johnson signs order on gun purchases by Chicago
Chicago is tightening up rules, when it comes to gun purchases by the city.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson signed a new order Wednesday strengthening the city's procurement standards for firearms, firearm accessories and ammunition, purchased for the Chicago Police Department and other safety departments.

Advocacy group Brady United Against Gun Violence found some law-enforcement agencies across the country have purchased firearms from unvetted gun dealers.

This new order ensures that public dollars support lawful business practices by developing stronger procurement standards for firearm-related purchases within 90 days.

Dealers will be required to disclose licensing and regulatory compliance information to prevent firearm trafficking, straw purchasing and theft.

"We have more gun dealers in America than McDonald's, Starbucks, and Walmart combined. Okay. Five of them, and we know this from ATF research, are responsible for 90% of crime guns. Right. So, what does that imply? What that's implying is that dealers are knowingly selling, and Brady has litigated these cases for 30 years, including on behalf of police officers who were shot in the line of duty by these crime guns in Chicago," Kris Brown with Brady United said.

Mayor Johnson said the city is looking into one specific dealer, which may have sold unvetted guns to the city of Chicago.

"There's one that we are keeping our eye on. This is a contract that was settled prior to me arriving... so we're keeping an eye on that. That's why my remarks that also included renewal."

He hopes this new order will help tighten laws to prevent that from happening in the future.
