CHICAGO (WLS) -- A retired marine veteran living with post-traumatic epilepsy will speak at Chicago fundraiser event on Saturday.
Captain Jack Somers, of Cary, has been an advocate to help find a cure for epilepsy.
Somers was deployed in 2010 to Afghanistan. 60 days after returning home, Somers had his first seizure while running a local Turkey Trot.
In 2012, Somers was officially diagnosed with epilepsy. He has been through about 50 treatments. So far, doctors say medications will help reduce symptoms, but will not cure the condition.
The gala to support CURE Epilepsy is Saturday at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park.
Broadway star Miguel Cervantes played Alexander Hamilton during the musical run in Chicago.
He lost his daughter Adelaide to epilepsy at the young age of 3. He will also perform at the gala.
