CHICAGO (WLS) -- Six suspects robbed a man at gunpoint downtown early Friday, and one of the thieves jumped into the victim's car and fired a gunshot as he tried to flee from the group, Chicago police said.

Police said a 30-year-old man was walking to his parked vehicle in the Loop's 300-block of North Lake Front Drive just before 2 a.m. when six people approached him. The suspects took out guns and hit the man before taking his property.

As the victim got into his vehicle and fled, one of the thieves got into the passenger seat, police said. There was a struggle inside of the vehicle, and the suspect fired a shot out of the window.

Police said no one was hit by the gunfire, and the victim continued driving before flagging down officers who were on patrol. The suspect tried to run away but was taken into custody in the nearby 100-block of West Wacker Drive.

The victim declined medical attention.

Officers recovered a weapon from the scene, and charges are pending as Area Three detectives investigate.

Further information was not immediately available.
