Painter's tape trick for perfectly hanging frames

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Hanging a single picture frame straight can be tricky enough.

But when you're trying to line up multiple frames at the exact same height, things can quickly go sideways-often leaving behind a wall full of unnecessary holes.

DIY Playbook's Casey Finn has a simple painter's tape trick that takes the guesswork out of hanging frames and helps ensure everything is level the first time.

The method works by creating a temporary template, allowing you to map out exactly where your nails should go before making any holes in the wall.

SUPPLIES

Picture frames
Painter's tape
Level
Pencil
Hammer
Nails
Tape measure

STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO HANG FRAMES PERFECTLY

Step 1: Find the center of the wall
Measure the wall and mark the center point. Then determine the height where you want your frame or gallery wall to sit and make a small pencil mark.
Step 2: Create a hanging template

Apply painter's tape across the back of the frame, aligning it with the hanging hardware. Mark the exact placement of the hooks or wire on the tape.
Step 3: Find the middle of the tape
Measure the painter's tape and mark its center point to ensure proper alignment.
Step 4: Transfer the template to the wall
Place the tape on the wall, lining up the center of the tape with your wall mark. Use a level to make sure it is straight before moving forward.
Step 5: Hammer the nails and hang the frames
Hammer nails where indicated on the tape, then remove the tape and hang the frame.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Always level the tape before hammering any nails
