10-year-old girl shot, killed in northwest Indiana: police

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- A 10-year-old girl has died after being shot Wednesday afternoon in Gary, police said Thursday morning.

Police said officers responded about 12:50 p.m. to the 4200-block of Maryland Street for a report of a girl suffering from a gunshot wound.

The child died on the scene.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public and the shooting appeared to be isolated.

Police did not immediately provide any additional information on what led up to the girl's death.

"This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has claimed the life of a young child," Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon Sr. said. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the victim's family and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss."

The Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force is investigating.
